When lead storage battery is charged [MP PET 1993; MP PMT 2000]

    A)                 Lead dioxide dissolves

    B)                 Sulphuric acid is regenerated

    C)                 The lead electrode becomes coated with lead sulphate

    D)                 The amount of sulphuric acid decreases

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

During charging of a lead storage battery, the reaction at the anode and cathode are            Anode:   \[PbS{{O}_{4}}+2{{e}^{-}}\to Pb+SO_{4}^{2-}\]                    Cathode: \[PbS{{O}_{4}}+2{{H}_{2}}O\to Pb{{O}_{2}}+4{{H}^{+}}+SO_{4}^{2-}+2{{e}^{-}}\]                                 In both the reactions \[{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\] is regenerated.
