Assertion (A): Areas near the equator receive rainfall throughout the year
Reason (R): High temperature and high humidity cause convectional rain in most afternoons near the equator.
In the context of the above statements, which one of the following is correct?

    A)  Both A and R is true and R is the correct explanation of A

    B)  Both A and R is true but R is not the correct explanation of A

    C)  A is true but R is false

    D)  A is false but R is true

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Assertion (A) is correct and Reason (R) correctly explains A, because air gets heated due to high temperature; it expands, becomes lighter and rises up. In the process it gathers lot of moisture and humidity increases. After rising to sufficient height, it cools down. Condensation lakes place as the temperature falls below dew points. Clouds are formed which cause heavy rainfall. Ascend of air starts after the sun rise and the whole process is complete by afternoon. That is why conventional rainfall near the equator occurs in the afternoon. After causing heavy rainfall the air of higher strata of the atmosphere descends and replaces the rising warm air. This completes the air cycle and creates suitable conditions for convectional rainfall next day.
