    Consider the following statements:
    1. In the troposphere the temperature falls at the rate of \[{{10}^{o}}C\] per km altitude.
    2. Cloudy days and nights are cooler than dry days and nights
Which of the above statements is/are correct?

    A)  1 only

    B)  2 only

    C)  Neither 1 nor 2

    D)  Both 1 and 2

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

In the troposphere, the temperature falls at the rate of \[{{6.4}^{o}}C\] per km altitude. This is known as normal lapse rate. Cloudy days are cooler than dry days but cloudy nights are warmer than dry nights. This is due to the fact that clouds obstruct both incoming short wave radiation and outgoing long wave radiations.
