Why did the Presidency cities expand?

    Answer:

The Presidency cities became very important and developed rapidly. Calcutta became a colonial metropolis. Both the British and the indigenous elite contributed to the growth of the city. With further British expansion, it became the capital of the British Empire in India. Bombay became a major commercial; and industrial centre. Madras was an important hub in South India. The British chose it because it provided a natural harbour which gave easy access to the maritime trade.
