JEE Main & Advanced Physics Magnetism Question Bank Earth's Magnetism

  • question_answer
If the angles of dip at two places are 30o and 45o respectively, then the ratio of horizontal  components of earth's magnetic field at the two places will be                                                                  [MP PET 1989]

    A)            \[\sqrt{3}:\sqrt{2}\]

    B)            \[1:\sqrt{2}\]

    C)            \[1:\sqrt{3}\]

    D)            \[1:2\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

               The horizontal components are \[{{({{B}_{H}})}_{1}}=B\cos {{\varphi }_{1}}\]and \[{{({{B}_{H}})}_{2}}=B\cos {{\varphi }_{2}}\] \[\therefore \,\frac{{{({{B}_{H}})}_{1}}}{{{({{B}_{^{H}}})}_{2}}}=\frac{\cos {{\varphi }_{1}}}{\cos {{\varphi }_{2}}}=\frac{\cos {{30}^{o}}}{\cos {{45}^{o}}}=\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}\times \sqrt{2}=\frac{\sqrt{3}}{\sqrt{2}}\]
