A rocket moves up while the gases move down. Explain this.

    Answer:

The chemicals inside the rocket are completely burnt and produce high velocity blast of gases. These gases move downwards through a nozzle with a very high velocity, and the rocket moves up to balance the momentum of the gases. Although the mass of the gases ejected is small, they have tremendous velocity and hence very large momentum. An equal momentum is imparted to the rocket in the opposite direction, so that, in spite of its large mass, the rocket goes up with a high velocity.
