Masses of the earth and the moon are in the ratio of 3 : 2 and the radii of the earth and the moon are in the ratio of 6 : 1. The ratio of the weight of the body on their surfaces will be

    A)  \[\frac{1}{12}\]

    B)  \[\frac{1}{24}\]

    C)  \[\frac{12}{1}\]

    D)  \[\frac{24}{1}\]

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

       \[{{m}_{e}}.{{m}_{m}}=3:2,\,\,{{r}_{m}}:{{r}_{m}}=6:1\,\,{{w}_{e}}:{{w}_{m}}=?\] We know, weight w = mg and m is constant \[\therefore \frac{W}{{{W}_{m}}}=\frac{{{g}_{e}}}{{{g}_{m}}}=\frac{GM}{{{\operatorname{Re}}^{2}}}\times \frac{R{{m}^{2}}}{G{{m}_{m}}}\] \[=\frac{3}{2}\times {{\left( \frac{1}{6} \right)}^{2}}=\frac{3}{2}\times \frac{1}{36}=\frac{1}{24}\]
