JEE Main & Advanced Physics Electrostatics & Capacitance Question Bank Grouping of Capacitors

  • question_answer
Two capacitors \[{{C}_{\text{1}}}\] and \[{{C}_{\text{2}}}=\text{ 2}{{C}_{\text{1}}}\] are connected in a circuit with a switch between them as shown in the figure. Initially the switch is open and \[{{C}_{\text{1}}}\] holds charge Q. The switch is closed. At steady state, the charge on each capacitor will be                                                                                         [Orissa JEE 2002]

    A)            \[Q,\,2Q\]

    B)            \[Q/3,\,2Q/3\]

    C)            \[3Q/2,\,3Q\]

    D)            \[2Q/3,\,4Q/3\]

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

               In steady state charge on C1 is \[{{Q}_{1}}=\left( \frac{{{C}_{1}}}{{{C}_{1}}+{{C}_{2}}} \right)\times Q=\frac{Q}{3}\]                               and charge on C2 is \[{{Q}_{2}}=\left( \frac{{{C}_{2}}}{{{C}_{1}}+{{C}_{2}}} \right).Q=\frac{2}{3}Q\]
