When \[0.5g\] of sulphur is burnt to \[S{{O}_{2}},\,4.6\,kJ\] of heat is liberated. What is the enthalpy of formation of sulphur dioxide [KCET 1998; AFMC 2001]

    A)                 + 147.2 kJ

    B)                 ? 147.2 kJ

    C)                 ? 294.4 kJ

    D)                 + 294.4 kJ

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

           \[S+{{O}_{2}}\to S{{O}_{2}},\,\,\,\,\Delta {{H}_{f}}=-\,4.6\,kJ\]            \[\because \] 0.5 gm. of sulphur on burning produce 1gm of  \[S{{O}_{2}}\]            \[\therefore \] 32 gm of sulphur on burning produce 64 gm.. of  \[S{{O}_{2}}\]                                 \[\therefore \Delta H=(\,-\,4.6\,kJ\,)\,\,\times 64=-\,294.4\,kJ\].
