Mention current manifestations of communalism in India. List out the main causes of communalism.

    Answer:

We are living through tumultuous times: times of communal conflict and social unrest, times of head on collision of minority religions with political powers. Side by side communalism and its negative effects continue to destabilize the country.
    (i) Communalism leads to intolerance, fear and suspicion towards members of other communities. It creates disunity among the people and is an obstacle in the way of national integration and peaceful co-existence.
(ii) It leads to the formation and growth of pressure groups to protect and promote the specific interests of the community, e.g., VHP etc.
(iii) Communal violence, which takes the form of mindless carnage, is on the rise leading to suspicion, mistrust, fear and vindictiveness.
(iv) Political parties are formed on the basis of religion and this can lead to separatism. Akali Dal, Shiv Sena, etc. are the examples of such political parties.
    (v) Religion based communities are used as a vote bank during elections.
In this way we can say that communalism is the greatest hurdle in the way of the successful working of democracy in India.
