    The anti-poverty strategy of the current government is based broadly on two plans: (i) (a) Economic growth helps significantly in reduction of poverty. It results in higher incomes and a better standard of living. (b) It widens opportunities of employment. (c) It also provides resources needed to invest in human development. (d) Better infrastructure increases employment opportunities. (ii) The government has introduced several measures for the removal of poverty. Some important are: (a) National Food for Work Program (NFWP), 2004 was launched in 150 backward districts It is open to all rural poor in need of wage employment. Food grains are provided free of cost to the states. (b) Prime Minister Rozgar Yojana (PMRY) started in 1993 aims at creating self-employ opportunities for educated unemployed youth. (c) Rural Employment Generation Programme (REGP) was launched in 1995 and aims at ere self-employment opportunities in rural areas and small towns. (d) Swarnajayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY) was launched in 1999 to bring poor families above poverty line by organizing them into self-help groups through bank credit and government subsidy. (e) Pradhan Mantri Gramodaya Yojana (PMGY) launched in 2000 gives additional central assist to stares for basic services such as primary health and education, rural shelter and drinking q, and rural electrification.
