If the point \[P(6,2)\] divides the line segment joining \[A(6,5)\]and \[B(4,y)\] in the ratio \[3:1,\] then the value of y is: (CBSE 2020)

    A) 4

    B) 3

    C) 2

    D) 1

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

    [d]  \[P(6,2)=\left\{ \frac{3\times 4+1\times 6}{3+1},\,\,\frac{3\times y+1\times 5}{3+1} \right\}\]
    \[=\left( \frac{12+6}{4},\frac{3y+5}{4} \right)=\left( 4,\frac{3y+5}{4} \right)\]
    On comparing y-coordinate.
    \[2=\frac{3y+5}{4}\,\,\,\,\Rightarrow \,\,\,3y+5=8\,\,\,\,\,\Rightarrow \,\,\,y=1\].
