  • question_answer
Four substances have the following electrical properties.
    Substance Electrical property
W Does not conduct under any condition
X Conducts only in aqueous solution
Y Conducts in both the molten and solid states
Z Conducts in both the molten state and aqueous solution
    What are these four substances?

    A)
    W X Y Z
     \[HCl\] S \[NaCl\] \[Pb\]

    B)
    W X Y Z
     \[Pb\] \[HCl\] \[NaCl\] S

    C)
    W X Y Z
     S \[HCl\] \[Pb\] \[NaCl\]

    D)
    W X Y Z
     S \[NaCl\] \[HCl\] \[Pb\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

S(W) is a non-metal. It does not conduct electricity under any condition. HCI (X) conducts electricity only in aqueous solution. It dissociates into ions which are responsible for carrying electric current through the solution. \[HC{{l}_{(aq)}}\xrightarrow{{}}H_{(aq)}^{+}+OH_{(aq)}^{-}\] \[Pb\] (Y) is a metal, conducts electricity in both molten and in solid state.      \[NaCl\] (Z) conducts electricity in both molten state and in aqueous solution. It ionizes into ions in aqueous solution. In the molten state, as the electrostatic forces of attraction between the oppositely charged ions are overcome by heat thus, the ions move freely and conduct electricity.
