\[S{{O}_{2}}\] as pollutant can be controlled by
    (I) using solar energy, nuclear energy, hydroelectric energy.
(II) low sulphur fuels, natural gas.
(Ill) desulphonation of high sulphur coal and oil before burning by FGD.
(IV) using water under high pressure. Correct methods are

    A) Both I and II

    B) Both I and III

    C) I, II and IV

    D) I, II and III

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

[d] \[S{{O}_{2}}\] in the atmosphere is due to burning of sulphur containing fossil fuel, \[S+{{O}_{2}}\to S{{O}_{2}}\] and from smelting and roasting of sulphides.\[CuFe{{S}_{2}}+{{O}_{2}}\to C{{u}_{2}}O+FeO+S{{O}_{2}}\] Content can be controlled by using alternate source of energy for burning, as nuclear energy, solar energy, hydroelectric energy. Fuel containing sulphur are desulphonated before burning by FGD (Fuel Gas Desulphurisation). If \[{{H}_{2}}O\] under high pressure is used, it will dissolve \[S{{O}_{2}}\] and will make acid rain. \[{{H}_{2}}O+S{{O}_{2}}\to {{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{3}}\] It will lower pH of the soil and thus fertility is decreased.
