Methylene blue in aqueous solution, is adsorbed on activated charcoal at\[25{}^\circ C\]. For this process, the correct statement is

    A) The adsorption is accompanied by a decrease in enthalpy

    B) The adsorption requires activation at \[25{}^\circ C\]

    C) The adsorption increases with increases of temperature

    D) The adsorption is irreversible

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

[a] Adsorption is spontaneous \[(\Delta G<0)\] and takes place with decrease in entropy (due to decrease in disorder).
    Thus, \[\Delta S<0\]
    Since, \[\Delta G=\Delta H-T\Delta S\Rightarrow \Delta H=(\Delta G+T\Delta S)\]
    Since, both \[\Delta G<0\], and \[\Delta S<0\]
    Hence, \[\Delta H<0\](exothermic)
By Le Chatelier?s principle, increase in temperature, decreases adsorption.
