In a city 20% persons read English newspaper, 40% read Hindi newspaper and 5% read both newspapers. The percentage of non-reader either paper is

    A)                 60%

    B)                 35%

    C)                 25%

    D)                 45%

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

                       \[P(A)=\frac{1}{5},\] \[P(B)=\frac{2}{5}\] and \[P(A\cap B)=\frac{1}{20}\]                    Then \[P(\bar{A}\cap \bar{B})=1-P(A\cup B)\]                                 \[=1-\left[ \frac{1}{5}+\frac{2}{5}-\frac{1}{20} \right]=\frac{9}{20}\] i.e., 45%.
