SSC Quantitative Aptitude Pipes & Cisterns Question Bank Pipe and Cistern (I)

  • question_answer
A large tanker can be filled by two pipes A and B in 60 min and 40 min, respectively. How many minutes will it take to fill the tanker from empty state if B is used for half the time and A and B fill it together for the other half?

    A) 15

    B) 20

    C) 27.5

    D) 30

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

    [d] Let the total time taken be x min. Then, \[\left( \frac{1}{40}\times \frac{x}{2} \right)+\left( \frac{1}{60}+\frac{1}{4} \right).\frac{x}{2}=1\] \[\Rightarrow \] \[\frac{x}{80}+\frac{x}{48}=1\] \[\Rightarrow \] \[3x+5x=240\] \[\Rightarrow \] \[8x=240\] \[\therefore \]      \[x=30\] Hence, the required time is 30 min.
