SSC Quantitative Aptitude Pipes & Cisterns Question Bank Pipe and Cistern (I)

  • question_answer
A leak in the bottom of a tank can empty the full tank in 8 h. An inlet pipe fills water in the tank at the rate of 4 L/min. When the tank is full, the inlet is opened and due to a leak, the tank is emptied in 12 h. How many litres does the cistern hold?

    A) 6250

    B) 5760

    C) 5200

    D) 4546

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

[b] Let the time taken by pipe to fill the tank is x h. Then, according to the question, \[\frac{1}{8}-\frac{1}{x}=\frac{1}{12}\]\[\Rightarrow \]\[\frac{1}{8}-\frac{1}{12}=\frac{1}{x}\]\[\Rightarrow \]\[\frac{1}{x}=\frac{1}{24}\] \[\therefore \]      \[x=24\,h\] Now, pipe fills in 1 min \[=4\,L\] \[24\,h=4\times 24\times 60=5760\,L\] Hence, the capacity of tank is 5760 L.
