The ratio of incomes of A and B is 5 : 3 and that of their expenditures is 9 : 5. If they save Rs. 2600 and Rs. 1800 respectively, then their incomes are

    A) Rs. 9000, Rs. 5400

    B) Rs. 10000, Rs. 6000

    C) Rs. 1000, Rs. 3600

    D) Rs. 8000, Rs. 4800

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

    [d] Let the incomes of A and B be Rs. 5x and Rs. 3x respectively and let their expenditures be Rs. 9y and Rs. 5y, respectively. Then, \[5x-9y=2600\]                          ...(i) and       \[3x-5y=1800\]                          ...(ii) On multiplying Eq. (ii) by 9 and Eq. (i) by 5 and subtracting, we get \[2x=3200\]\[\Rightarrow \]\[x=1600\] \[\therefore \] A's income \[=Rs.(5\times 1600)\] = Rs. 8000, B's income \[Rs.(3\times 1600)\] \[\text{Rs}\text{.=4800}\]
