  • question_answer
Brothers A and B had some savings in the ratio 4 : 5. They decided to buy a gift for their sister, sharing the cost in the ratio 3 : 4. After they bought, A spent two-third of his amount while B is left with Rs. 145. Then, the value of the gift is

    A) Rs. 70

    B) Rs. 105

    C) Rs. 140

    D) Rs. 175

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

    [c] Let the savings of A and B are Rs. 4x, Rs. 5x and the share in cost of gift are Rs. 3y, Rs. 4y respectively. According to the question, For A,   \[4x-3y=\frac{2}{3}\times 4x\] \[\Rightarrow \]               \[x=\frac{9y}{4}\]                                 …(i) For B,   \[5x-4y=145\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[5\times \frac{9y}{4}-4y=145\]  [by Eq. (i)] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[y=20\] \[\therefore \]      Cost of gift \[=3y+4y\]             \[=7\times 20=\text{Rs}\text{.}\,\,140\]
