Identify the given figures (1, 2 & 3) showing meiotic phases and select the correct option.

    A) 1-Metaphase 2-Anaphase 3-Telophase

    B) 1-Metaphase-I 2-Anaphase-I 3-Telophase-I

    C) 1-Metaphase-II 2-Anaphase-II 3-Telophase-II

    D) 1-Anaphase-I 2-Metaphase-I 3-Telophase-I

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

[b] The given figures (1, 2 and 3) showing meiotic phases are respectively metaphase I, anaphase I and telophase I. Metaphase I: Spindle apparatus appear and the chromosomes are arranged on equatorial plate, with the centromeres towards the pole. Spindle fibres become attached to the centromeres of the two homologous chromosomes. Anaphase I: The homologous chromosomes break apart while sister chromatids remains associated at their centromere. At the end of anaphase I, two groups of chromosomes are produced at two poles, having half the number of parental chromosomes. Telophase I: The homologous chromosome pairs complete their migration to the two poles as a result of spindle action. As a result a haploid set of chromosomes is present at each pole, with each chromosome still having two chromatids. A nuclear envelope reforms around each chromosome set, the spindle disappears, and cytokinesis follows.
