The following reaction points out the process of \[\alpha \]-ketoglutaric acid \[+N{{H}_{4}}{{^{+}}_{{}}}NADPH\] \[\xrightarrow[dehydrogenase]{Glutamate}Glutamate+{{H}_{2}}O+NADP\]

    A) Nitrification

    B)        Transamination

    C)        Amination

    D)        Reductive amination

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

[d] The organic acid \[\alpha \] - ketoglutaric acid plays an important role in the synthesis of amino acid. The ammonia formed by nitrogen assimilation (i.e., reduction of nitrates), reacts with a-ketoglutaric acid to form an amino acid, i.e., glutamic acid. In this process, a-ketoglutaric acid comes from Krebs cycle and hydrogen is donated by the coenzyme NADH or NADPH. The reaction takes place in the presence of enzyme glutamic dehydrogenase.
