When a sample of gas is compressed at constant temperature from 15 atm to 60 atm, its volume changes from 76 \[c{{m}^{3}}\] to 20.5 \[c{{m}^{3}}\]. Which of the following statements are possible explanations of this behaviour?          (1) The gas behaves non-ideally (2) The gas dimerises (3) The gas is adsorbed into the vessel walls

    A) 1, 2 and 3

    B) 1 and 2 only

    C) 2 and 3 only

    D) 1 only

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

[d] Given, \[{{P}_{1}}=15atm,\,\,{{P}_{2}}=60atm\] \[{{V}_{1}}=76c{{m}^{3}},{{V}_{2}}=20.5c{{m}^{3}}.\] If the gas is an ideal gas, then according to Boyle's law, it must follow the equation, \[{{P}_{1}}{{V}_{1}}={{P}_{2}}{{V}_{2}}\] \[{{P}_{1}}\times {{V}_{1}}=15\times 76=1140\] \[{{P}_{2}}\times {{V}_{2}}=60\times 20.5=1230\] \[\therefore {{P}_{1}}{{V}_{1}}\ne {{P}_{2}}{{V}_{2}}\]  \[\therefore \] The gas behaves non-ideally. The given information is not sufficient to comment on other statements.
