Define the following:  (a) Monsoon (b) Loo (c) Mango Showers

    Answer:

     (a) Monsoons: The word "Monsoon" is derived from the Arabic word "Mausarn" meaning seasons. Monsoons are seasonal reversal of winds. In summer, the direction of winds is South-west. They blow from high pressure sea to low pressure land. In winter the direction of the winds is north- east and blow from high pressure land to low pressure oceans.
    (b) Loo: Strong. gusty, hot, dry winds blow during the day over the north and North-western parts of India during the summer season. Sometimes they even continue until late in the evening. Direct exposure to these winds can be fatal.
Mango showers are pre-monsoons. There is sudden outbreak of pre-monsoons, caused by jet streams. Pre-monsoon showers are a common phenomenon in Kerala. Locally they are known as mango showere since they help in the early ripening of mangoes.
