              Discuss the main features of the Indus river system.

    Main features of the Indus river system:
    (a) Indus rises from Mansarowar in Tibet. It is 2900 km long. It enters Indian territory in Jammu and Kashmir. It forms a huge gorge in this part.
    (b) Its catchment area is about 1,165,000 sq km. About one-third lies within India. Its tributaries are Satluj, Beas, Jhelum, Ravi and Chenab.
    (c) The Indus basin covers the western part of northern plains of India in J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab. It slopes very gently and has about 300 metres gradient.
    (d) The Indus plains stretch over 1200 km between the foot hills of western Himalayas and the Arabian sea. It is a very fertile plain and it has one of the largest network of canals for irrigation. Its water irrigates Punjab, Haryana and the western parts of Rajasthan.
