    Which are the major physiographic divisions of India? Explain.

    Major physiographic divisions of lndia are:
    (a) The Himalayas: The Himalayan mounts extend from Indus to Brahmaputra. They have three parallel ranges, Himadri, Himachal and Shiwaliks.
    (b) The Northern Plains: The nor1hem plains are formed by huge silt and alluvium deposited by Himalayan rivers and their tributaries, the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra. They are very fetile plains.
    The Peninsular Plateau: Peninsular plateau is the oldest division, made of volcanic trap and has igneous and metamorphic rocks. It is divided into two par1S, central highlands and deccan plateau.
    (c) The Coastal Plains: Coastal plains are the western coastal plains known as Konkan in North and Malabar in South. Eastern coastal plains are known as Coromandel coast.
    (d) The Islands: The islands group are Lakshadweep islands in the Arabian sea and Andarnan and Nicobar islands in the Bay of Bengal in the form of archipelago.
