The outermost range of the Himalayas is formed by unconsolidated sediments brought down by the rivers. Flat bottomed valleys separate large portions of Shiwaliks. These valleys are covered with thick gravel and alluvium and are called duns or doons. Dehradun, Kotli and Patli are some of the dunes. Since they are made of loose rock material, they are weak and prone to landslides and soil erosion in the rainy season. Duns are more prominent in the western half of the Himalayas.
