Sri Lanka is an island-nation, just a few kilometres off the southern coast of Tamil Nadu. Like other nations in the South Asian region, Sri Lanka has a diverse population with a complex ethnic composition like:

(i) The major social groups are Sinhala speaking which accounts for 74 per cent of total population.

(ii) 18 per cent are Tamils. Among Tamils there are two sub-groups:

(a) Sri Lankan Tamils-accounts 13 per cent-natives of Sri Lanka.

(b) Indian Tamils-accounts 5 per cent-Indian origin.

(iii) Rest 8 per cent were Christians of both Tamil and Sinhala communities.
