SSC Quantitative Aptitude Speed, Time and Distance Question Bank Speed Time and Distance (II)

  • question_answer
A and B are 15 km apart and when travelling towards each other meet after half an hour whereas they meet two and a half hours later if they travel in the same direction. The faster of the two travels at the speed of [SSC CGL Tier II, 2017]

    A) 15 km/h

    B) 18 km/h

    C) 10 km/h

    D) 8 km/h

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

    [b] Let speed of A = a km/h and speed of B = b km/h When both are in same direction, Relative speed \[\text{=}\frac{\text{Distance}}{\text{Time}}\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[a-b=\frac{15}{\frac{5}{2}}\]\[\Rightarrow \] \[a-b=6\]                 …(i) When both are in opposite direction, Relative speed \[\text{=}\frac{\text{Distance}}{\text{Time}}\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[a+b=\frac{15}{\frac{1}{2}}\]\[\Rightarrow \] \[a+b=30\]           …(ii) Solving Eq. (i) and (ii), we get a = 18 km/h and b = 12 km/h Hence, speed of faster man = 18 km/h
