The mean of 9 observations is 36, If the mean of the first 5 observations is 32 and that of the last 5 observations is 39, then the fifth observation is ___.

    A)  28

    B)  31

    C)  43

    D)  37

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

    \[36\times 9={{x}_{1}}+{{x}_{2}}+{{x}_{3}}+....+{{x}_{9}}\]                    ?.(i) \[5\times 32={{x}_{1}}+{{x}_{2}}+{{x}_{3}}+{{x}_{4}}+{{x}_{5}}\]                  ?.(ii) \[5\times 39={{x}_{5}}+{{x}_{6}}+{{x}_{7}}+{{x}_{8}}+{{x}_{9}}\]                  ,...(iii) Adding (ii) and (iii), we get \[355={{x}_{1}}+{{x}_{2}}+{{x}_{3}}+{{x}_{4}}+{{x}_{5}}+......+{{x}_{9}}+{{x}_{5}}\] Using (i), we get \[355-36\times 9={{x}_{5}}\Rightarrow {{x}_{5}}=31\]
