If the mean of x and 1/x is M, then the mean of \[{{x}^{2}}\] and s\[1/{{x}^{2}}\] is

    A)  \[{{M}^{2}}\]

    B)  \[{{M}^{2}}/4\]

    C)  \[2{{M}^{2}}-1\]

    D)  \[2{{M}^{2}}+1\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

    Mean of x and \[\frac{1}{x}\], \[M=\frac{x+\frac{1}{x}}{2}\] \[\Rightarrow \] \[x+\frac{1}{x}=2M\] We have, \[\Rightarrow \] \[{{x}^{2}}+\frac{1}{{{x}^{2}}}={{\left( x+\frac{1}{x} \right)}^{2}}-2x\left( \frac{1}{x} \right)\] \[={{(2M)}^{2}}-2=4{{M}^{2}}-2=2(2{{M}^{2}}-1)\] Now, the mean of \[{{x}^{2}}\] and \[\frac{1}{{{x}^{2}}}=\frac{{{x}^{2}}+\frac{1}{{{x}^{2}}}}{2}\] \[=\frac{2(2{{M}^{2}}-1)}{2}=2{{M}^{2}}-1\]
