The standard deviation of some temperature data in degree Celsius is 5, If data were converted into Fahrenheit, then the variance would be

    A)  81

    B)  57

    C)  36

    D)  25

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

    (a): If y is the temperature in degree Celsius then the corresponding Temperature in Fahrenheit is given as, \[y=\frac{9}{5}x+32\] \[\therefore \]Variance is multiplied by \[{{\left( \frac{9}{5} \right)}^{2}}\] i.e.,     by\[\frac{81}{25}\] \[\therefore {{(Var)}_{in{}^\circ F}}=\frac{81}{25}\times {{(Var)}_{in{}^\circ C}}=\frac{81}{25}\times {{5}^{2}}=81\]
