     Vembanad Lake is the largest coastal lake of the western coast. This 75km long and 5-10 km wide lake is located on the coast of Kerala. Kochi is situated on its opening into the sea. Pulicat Lake is located .on the Andhra coast some 40 km north of Chennai. This lake has been barred by a long sand spit known as Sriharikota Island on which is located the satellite launching station of the Indian Space Research Organization. The lagoon is about 60km long and about 16 km wide in its widest part. Chilka Lake is on the Odisha coast in the south of the Mahanadi delta. This lagoon on the Orissa coast is about 70km long and its maximum width on the north-east is nearly 22km, narrowing to about 7 km on its south-western end. It is the biggest lake in the country and its area varies between 780 sq km in winter to 1,144 sq km in the monsoon months. Sambhar Lake is the largest salt-lake of Rajasthan. This lake is located about 65 km west of Jaipur. Situated at an altitude of about 360 m in the Aravali terrain, this lake is about 30 km long with an average width of 3-8 km. It occupies an area of about 225 sq km during the rainy season but shrinks considerably in dry season.
