What happens when we move vertically upwards from the earth?

    Answer:

When we move vertically upwards from the earth, gravity decreases and so does the temperature in the Troposphere. At the top of the Troposphere is the Tropopause where, - water vapour cannot go higher, thus it changes into ice and is trapped here. The next layer is the stratosphere. The temperature first decreases then increases with altitude because there is a gas called ozone which does not allow ultraviolet rays to enter the earth's surface. The layer after this is the mesosphere and the temperature is as low as ? \[110{}^\circ C\] near the top of this layer. The atmosphere is very rarefied but thick enough to slow1 down meteoroids and burn them. In the next layer called the thermosphere, temperature reaches \[2000{}^\circ C\] the lower part of this layer is called the ionosphere. It contains electrically charged particles called ions which help in transmitting radio waves back to the earth. The outermost layer extends to about' 1600 km. The temperature in this layer is very high and is about\[5500{}^\circ C\]. The air is very thin on account of low density. Lighter gases like helium and hydrogen are found here. It merges into the outer space.
