What is a PIL and what purpose does it serve? Give an example to explain.

    Answer:

A public interest litigation (PIL) is a case filed by a member of the public or an NGO on behalf of people whose rights have been violated. It may also concern an issue that affects the general public, for example, environmental pollution. By allowing any member of the public to file a petition on behalf of victims of injustice, PILs have made justice more accessible to the vast majority of Indians who have neither the resources nor the awareness to fight for their rights. PILs have also simplified the process of filing a petition and to that extent have speeded up the process of litigation.
