Why did Akbar want to befriend the Rajputs? What steps did he take to achieve this?

    Answer:

Akbar realised that to establish an empire in a Hindu country like India, it was imperative to befriend the Rajput?s. Also, he was impressed by their loyalty and bravery. He decided to seek the cooperation of the Rajput?s to expand the Mughal Empire and he accepted the submission of Raja Bharmal of Amber (Jaipur) and welcomed a matrimonial alliance with the ruling family. He married Jodha Bai, the daughter of Raja Bharmal. Akbar also gave high ranks, titles and properties to the members of his Rajput family. Also, he did not force his Rajput wives to convert to Islam. Rajput customs were also observed in Akbar's court.
