Explain the principle of reciprocal inhibition.

    Answer:

Ans.     The Wolpe’s theory of systematic desensitization is based on this principle. This principle states that "the presence of two mutually opposing forces at the same time, inhibit the weaker force." In other words, one cannot be both relaxed and anxious at the same time. Thus, the relaxation response dominates on the imagination of mild anxiety provoking stimulus. The client becomes able to tolerate progressively greater levels of anxiety because of his/her relaxed state.
