SSC Quantitative Aptitude Boats & Streams Question Bank Train and Boat (I)

  • question_answer
A boat moves downstream at the rate of 1 km in \[\text{7}\frac{1}{2}\] min and upstream at the rate of 5 km an hour. What is the speed (in km/h) of the boat in the still water? [SSC CGL Tier II, 2015]

    A) \[4\]

    B) \[6\frac{1}{2}\]

    C) \[3\frac{1}{2}\]

    D) \[8\]

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

[b] Let, the speed of boat in still water is x km/h and the speed of current is y km/ h. Then, according to the question, \[x+y=\frac{1}{\left( \frac{7.5}{60} \right)}=8km/h\] and       \[x-y=\frac{5}{1}=5\,km/h\] \[\therefore \]      \[x=\frac{8+5}{2}=\frac{13}{2}=6\frac{1}{2}\,km/h\]
