SSC Quantitative Aptitude Boats & Streams Question Bank Train and Boat (I)

  • question_answer
A boat goes 24 km upstream and 28 km downstream in 6 h. It goes 30 km upstream and 21 km downstream in 6 h and 30 min. The speed of the boat still water is

    A) 10 km/h

    B) 4 km/h

    C) 14 km/h

    D) 6 km/h

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

[a] Let a km/h be the speed of the boat in still water and b km/h be the speed of the current. Boat will travel downstream at \[\left( a+6 \right)\,km/h\]and upstream at\[(a\,-b)\,km/h\] \[\therefore \]    \[\frac{28}{a+b}+\frac{24}{a-b}=6\] and      \[\frac{21}{a+b}+\frac{30}{a-b}\] \[=6\frac{1}{2}=\frac{13}{2}\] On solving Eqs. (i) and (ii), we get \[a=10,\]\[b=4\]
