What are pleiotropic genes? Explain with example.

    Answer:

Pleiotropic gene is a single gene controlling more than one trait. The pleiotropic genes provide us valuable information regarding the evolution of different genes and gene families. It explains that most proteins have multiple roles in distinct cell types. Thus, any genetic change that alters gene expression or function can potentially have wide ranging effects in a variety of tissues.             For example, phenylketonuria is a disorder caused by mutation in the gene coding the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase. The affected individuals show hair and skin pigmentation and mental retardation.
