Genome project is a part of genetic engineering in which complete genome of an organism is sequenced and maped. In case of plants, rice is the first crop of which genome sequence is being done. The genome sequence is helpful in developing different varieties of rice in less time.

· During 1960-2000, the production of rice increased form 35 million tonnes to 89. 5 million tonnes, which is credited to the semidwarf varieties of rice.

· The improved varieties of rice were fortified with vitamin-A (Golden rice) and were nutritionally better than others, e.g. Jaya and Ratna.
