(i) After implantation, finger-like progections called chorionic villi appear on the trophoplast. These chorionic villi are surrounded by uterine tissue and maternal blood. Later, the chorionic villi and uterine tissue become interdigitated and jointly form the placenta. (ii) Placenta secretes human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG), human Placental Lactogen (hPL), oestrogen and progesterone.
