Explain the technology of plant tissue culture briefly.

    Answer:

Tissue culture is a technique, by which whole plants can be regenerated from explants (any small plant part) under sterile conditions. The explants are cultured on the specific nutrient medium. The nutrient medium should contain a carbon source (such as sucrose), inorganic salts, vitamins, amino acids and growth regulators such as auxins, cytokinins, etc. The explants are cultured in nutrient medium after sterilisation. These are allowed to grow in artificial conditions. After growth of plantlets from explants, these are kept in greenhouse for acclimatisation. Finally, they are shifted to field. The capacity of a cell to generate whole plant is called totipotency. The plants, thus generated are genetically similar to the mother plant, so they are called somaclones.
