reaction is used to convert phenolic compound into o-hydroxy carboxylic acids.
Phenol is
converted into phenoxide and thus its reactivity is increased for electrophilic
substitution. On passing into
alkaline solution of phenol, sodium salicylate is formed which on acidification
forms salicylic acid.
