heating with (or) and KOH
gives o-hydroxy aldehydes (or o-hydroxy carboxylic acids). If ortho
position is already occupied, para isomer is formed.
This reaction is called Reimer-Tiemann reaction. [1]
(ii) Williamson ether synthesis Alkoxide on reaction
with alkyl halide to form ether.
It follows mechanism
and is called Williamson ether synthesis. Generally mixed ethers are prepared by
this synthesis.
For better yield, alkyl halide (R'X) should be 1°
and alkoxide should be 2° or 3°.
