Anne Sullivan was Helen's teacher when she turned seven years old. Anne taught Helen to write by spelling words on Helen's hand. Within three years Helen knew the alphabet and could sad and write in Braille, the system of writing and printing words for the blind.

When she was sixteen years old, she learned to speak after taking lessons from a deaf teacher. She was then ready to attend college.
