[a] Ozone depletion has been a major environmental concern since 1980s. Ozone covers the Earth as an umbrella and protect the biosphere from hazardous UV rays. UV rays can lead to skin cancer, skin burn and other diseases to life including human on Earth. Chlorofluorocarbons and other halogen compounds react with the ozone at the upper atmosphere and deplete the ozone layer. Ozone itself acts as a greenhouse gas in lower atmosphere (troposphere). Montreal protocol deals with the restriction of ozone depleting substances and Vienna Convention deals with the protection of ozone layer.
