Three Anglo-Maratha wars were fought first (1775-1782), second (1803-1805) and third (1817-1818). As a result of First Anglo Maratha War, the company retained control of Salsette, but all the territories occupied by the British, after the Treaty of Purandar were given back to the Marathas, The second phase of struggle was intimately connected with the circumstances created by growing French power in India.
