Direction: Study the following pie-charts and line graph carefully and answer the questions given below: The pie-charts show the distance covered by boats moving upstream and downstream by different boats. And the line graph shows the speed of stream (in kmph) of different boats. Distance covered upstream = 2600 km Distance covered downstream = 1800 km

If the time taken by boat A to travel upstream is equal to the time taken by boat D to travel downstream and the speed of boat A is 14 kmph then find the speed of boat D in still water.

    A)  \[10\frac{8}{65}kmph\]

    B)  \[11\frac{5}{8}kmph\]

    C)  \[9\frac{8}{65}kmph\]

    D)  \[12\frac{6}{65}kmph\]

    E)  \[8\frac{3}{65}kmph\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

    Time taken by boat A upstream = Time taken by boat D downstream or, \[\frac{10}{100}\times \frac{260}{14-2}=\]Boat D downstream \[\Rightarrow \] Boat D downstream = \[\frac{260}{12}\]= \[\frac{65}{3}\] hours Let the speed of boat D in still water be x. \[\therefore \] Downstream speed of boat D = x + 4 Now, \[x+4=\frac{17}{100}\times \frac{1800}{65}\times 3=\frac{306\times 3}{65}\] or, \[65x+260=918\] or, \[65x=918-260=658\] \[\therefore \,\,x=\frac{658}{65}\,=10\frac{8}{65}\,kmph\]
