  • question_answer
In an examination the number of passed candidates was three times the number of failed candidates. If 27 fewer candidates had appeared and 7 more had failed the exam, the ratio of passed to failed candidates would have become 2:1. Find the total number of candidates.

    A)  200

    B)  220

    C)  167

    D)  192

    E)  175

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

     Let the number of failed candidates be x. \[\therefore \]The number of passed candidates will be 3x. Hence total number of candidates = 4x Now, according to the question, Then, \[=\frac{(4x-27)-(x+7)}{x+7}=\frac{2}{1}\] or- \[\frac{3x-27-7}{x+7}=\frac{2}{1}\] or, 3x - 34 = 2x + 14 \[\therefore \] x = 48 Thus, total number of candidates \[=4\times 48=192\]
